The President spoke additionally of the harm done to diplomatic causes by America's operations at Guantanamo and of its drain on military resources, "with nearly $450 million spent last year alone to keep it running." In her interview with Brian Lehrer, Karen Greenberg also highlighted these financial costs. Spending on Gitmo does not decrease despite fewer and fewer inmates being kept there, so "the cost goes up with every detainee that's released."
