"Homegrown" New Republic

Faisal Shahzad, an American citizen and affiliate of the Pakistani Taliban charged with attempting to detonate a car bomb in Times Square, is one of 131 Americans charged in the United States with serious "jihadist" crimes. Such individuals, a third of whom were born in the United States, raise uncomfortable questions about America's problem with homegrown terrorism. Many Americans have remained convinced that such problems are strictly European, yet recent cases such as that of Shahzad tell us otherwise.
